Mohala (Full Bloom) ©1988 George Kahumoku, Jr.
This song was written for my dear friend, Mele Anna Meyer, and her two sons Jeffrey and JJ Pritcher who lived in Leleiwi near Keaukaha in Hilo, Hawaii. Joe Camacho, another close friend, gave her home the name Mohala (Full Bloom) because the aina (land) was filled with fresh blooming flowers. I wrote this song to honor Meleanna and her sons. I sing it to them whenever they come to my show.
Keia ka manaʻo ō Leleiwi
Ka hale Mohala ō Keaukaha
Pumehana ka pō ō Mohala
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
Ka hale Mohala ka moana
I ke kai hāwanawana
Ke ‘ala lipoa, waiwai iʻole
Koni koni i ka puʻuwa
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
E lohe ka makani ō Mohala
Na makani i ka puʻuwai
E hanu ka hā ō Mohala
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
Haʻina ia mai ka puana
E kolu hoaloha ō Leleiwi
Puʻuhonua ka hale ō Mohala
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
Koni koni i ka puʻuwai
These are my thoughts of Leleiwi
The house in full bloom located in Keau-kaha
Warm are the nights of Mohala
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Brings a throbbing to my heart
This full blossomed house near the ocean
With whispering sounds of the sea
The fragrance of lipoa and waiwai iʻole
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Listen to the winds of Mohala
The winds of my heart
Experience the breath of Mohala
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Tell the story of
My three friends of Leleiwi
Mohala is my place of refuge
Brings a throbbing to my heart
Brings a throbbing to my heart
