After Christmas Haiku by George Kahumoku, Jr.
Hawk flies in the Sky
The Sun rises in the east
In Larkin Valley
The clouds have lifted
Revealing a cloudless sky
Light blue horizon
Sky blue Sun above
Green & Brown redwoods below
Eucalyptus trees
Silhouetted ridge
Line the green valley below
Dividing white fence
Keep the cattle in
Separating the horses,
From the beefalo
Wild turkeys gobble
The black crows squawk fly and land
The gophers dig holes
Below our pasture
The hummingbird birds buzz and feed
All is green from rain
The Magnolia
Flowers wither and then they drop
To the ground below
The air smells earthly
With subtle tones of manure
From Ranches close by
Helicopters fly
South to Watsonville airport
Cessnas dot the sky
Shining sun is warm
On my face, body and feet
Chilled by the North winds
Blowing through Larkin
Valley just below our house
The dogs are quiet
Backing up beeping
Interspersed with country hum
Gratitude blessings
After Christmas thoughts
Sitting outside with the dogs
