George Kahumoku Jr.'s workshop provides students and spouses or partners with numerous cultural activities and classes. Students with varied experience can choose from several levels of classes from beginning to advanced Hawaiian slack key guitar and ‘ukulele. Classes are also offered in lei making, hula, Hawaiian songs and singing and often other classes, such as song writing, and lap steel.

Aloha Workshop Students,

George Kahumoku Jr’s 15th Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar and Ukulele Workshop 2012 (June 17-June 24, 2012) Registration is now open.

This year you can fill it out online, then send in a check OR, with an additional fee, use PayPal.

Student tuition fee remains at $1000: This includes all instruction (group and private lessons), workshop T-shirt, one ticket to the SLACK KEY SHOW-Masters of Hawaiian Music show at the Napili Kai (next door) on Wednesday night, most lunches and dinners from Sunday to Sunday, Workshop Songbook and Dis N Dat theory/chord book, participation in kanikapilas and the Slack Key Festival performance.

Spouse/Companion rate: for companions NOT PARTICIPATING IN MUSIC CLASSES, tuition is half price to cover food (lunches and dinners), participation in hula or or culture classes, T-shirt, ticket to Slack Key Show.

  • Sunday June 17
    • 6pm Welcome Dinner,
    • 7:30pm Kanikapila (jam session) at the Mauian Hotel.
  • Monday
    • classes begin 8:30am,
    • lunch at noon,
    • afternoon classes,
    • 6pm dinner,
    • 7:30 Kanikapila at the Napili Kai Beach Resort Pavilion (next door)
  • Tuesday – same as Monday, except that after dinner at 7:30 will be the “talent show” at the Napili Kai Pavilion (on stage, support musicians available)
  • Wednesday
    • classes begin 8:30,
    • lunch at noon,
    • afternoon is free (dinner on your own),
    • 7:30 SLACK KEY SHOW at the Napili Kai Pavilion, teachers performing.
  • Thursday – same as Monday
  • Friday – same as Monday
  • Saturday
    • classes begin 8:30am,
    • lunch at noon,
    • some afternoon classes,
    • 3pm whole group rehearsal,
    • dinner at 6pm,
    • 7:30 kanikapila at the Napili Kai Pavilion
  • Sunday
    • photo shoot (wearing workshop T-shirt) poolside at the Mauian,
    • lunch on your own,
    • 11:30 leave for Kahului for the Slack Key Festival at the MACC,
    • performance at 2pm,
    • final group photo stage-side immediately after the performance. This is the final activity of the workshop.
  • Monday
    8:30am Mauian Ohana room-optional staff and student debriefing, discussion, and suggestions for next year. All welcome, but feedback also invited on written forms.

In case you can arrive early enough, on the Saturday before the workshop (June 16) there will be a special 4 Fathers/4 Sons (Kahumokus, Kamakahis, Hoopiis, one family other pending) show. Tickets are available through the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) box office in Kahului (Tickets 242-SHOW).
