We are deeply saddened to hear and report that Hawaiian Music has lost another of her sons, Chino Montero. Chino was a masterful guitar player and his falsetto singing was inspirational; I am talking “chicken skin“…
We were blessed to have him grace the stage at our weekly Slack Key Show on Maui. We were especially blessed to host Chino and Uncle Dennis Kamakahi together on stage last October, performing “I Kona”.
We miss you both and are so fortunate to have had you enrich our lives.
Here is the press release that we issued…
Maui, Hawaii –
May 2, 2014 – George Kahumoku Jr’s Slack Key Show-Masters of Hawaiian Music is deeply saddened to report that one of Hawaii’s most talented guitarists and falsetto vocalists, Chino Montero suddenly passed away early today from a pulmonary edema. Just beginning to emerge as a solo artist with the release of his acclaimed, Made in Hawaii, Chino had recently completed a mainland Christmas tour with Herb Ohta Jr., Keoki Kahumoku, and John Keawe. Chino was added to Slack Key Show roster last October when he came to Maui with Dennis Kamakahi to perform at our Anniversary Show. Chino was scheduled to perform later this month.
One of Hawaii’s most versatile guitarists, he performed and recorded with many of Hawaii’s top artists, and was the founder of the group, Palolo. He played and recorded in Hawaii, the Mainland, and throughout Japan and the world as a band member with such artists as Amy Hana’iali’i (eleven years), and Willie K. His music was featured on Amy’s five Grammy Nominated albums, all which received Na Hoku Hano Hano awards.
George Kahumoku Jr. and the Slack Key Show offer our deepest condolences to Chino’s family, friends, and many fans. What an honor to have performed with this incredibly talented Hawaiian master musician.
