  • The Great Goat Escape

Everyone has had this happen at some point.  When you leave for an appointment only to realize a block from your house that you forgot something important.  Yesterday we were on our way to our weekly Slack Key Show this time with featured artist Kimo West, Weird Al’s guitar player who’s real passion is Slack Key (it was a great show by the way anyone who wasn’t there missed out.)  When we were about a block away from home I realized that I had forgotten my cell phone.

George who was driving turned the van around to head back to the ranch when out the passenger side window we saw a small herd of wild goats.  As we got closer Mom said “hey those goats look familiar.”  It was at this point that George realized that these were not wild goats at all, but rather his goats that had somehow escaped from their pasture.  Naturally things like this always go wrong on the ranch right before a gig rather than when we actually have time to do them.

Everyone immediately sprang into action, George and Mom leapt from the vehicle and started herding the goats back to the ranch.  Even though the farm is not normally my department I threw off my blazer and dress Hawaiian shirt and ran ahead of them to open gates and keep the returning goats occupied with treats.  As we herded them, we discovered that they had leapt over a weak point in the fence of the new pasture George had just acquired.

Next step was to get all of George’s goats and Mom’s miniature horses out of new 4 acre pasture which is always a bit of a long drawn out task, but possible if you bribe them with treats.  After about twenty minutes (which is how long everything takes to do) we finally had the animals out of the unsecured pasture and back home.  Needless to say we didn’t get to go swimming before the show this time.  Sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise to forget your cell phone.

  • Wao Akua – The Forest of the Gods Nominated for a Grammy Yesterday

I know the Kahumoku Family Blog has been on hiatus for quite some time.  This is because I have been on the mainland working hard to move out here.  Because of this I have not been able to write much.  Now that I live with George however you can expect to hear a lot more from me.

    I'm Back...

    I’m Back…

I have the perfect story to kick off the end of the hiatus.  Today George Kahumoku was nominated for a Grammy in the Regional Roots category.

We just learned this when Amy Stillman, whose ear is close to the ground when it comes to the Grammys, congratulated George on his nomination on Facebook while we were getting ready for our weekly Slack Key Show.  We then learned that our friend and colleague, Daniel Ho, was nominated as well in the Pop Instrumental category for E Kahe Malie.  It seems the Grammys just can’t stay away from George and Daniel (this also means that I get to go to LA and attend the Grammys with them again.)  Also, Kimo West, our featured artist tonight, contributed to Weird Al’s also nominated comedy album, Apocalypse.  I congratulate all of them for their nominations and wish them luck.
